This is a conversation between NPR News Analyst Juan Williams and NPR Morning Edition Host Steve Inskeep.

  • Williams: McCain has been such an advocate, also, of closing loopholes in the system to the point where he’s angered some of the big donors in the Republican party who felt that funding was a big GOP advantage over the Democrats. So McCain finds himself in an odd bind.
  • Inskeep: People say, “Fine job, McCain. You don’t like fundraising? We won’t give you any.”
  • Williams: Exactly, exactly my point. And McCain’s camp is now looking—really—for Donors—this is an interesting maneuver—to have donor’s give money in the fall to a so-called “victory fund” that is a joint enterprise between his campaign and the Republican National Committee. Donors can give $28,500 to the party but for the fall election they can only give $2,300 to McCain. So the party money will be used jointly for phone banks, direct mail, political ads—just what McCain campaign will need.
  • Inskeep: Excuse me, is that the kind of loophole that John McCain has stood against as a senator?
  • Williams: Oh, look at that.

I could listen to that Steve Inskeep’s umbrage all day.
